In October 2009, a handful of adventurous travelers journeyed to the Brazilian Pantanal, the world’s largest freshwater wetland and some of the richest wildlife viewing in the Americas! Covering an area of 360,000 square miles, the Pantanal is a huge wilderness region of wetlands offering a complex of aquatic and terrestrial environments, varied topography and an extremely rich fauna. The variety of birds is astounding, touting 26 species of parrots including the endangered and beautiful Hyacinth Macaw, the world’s largest parrot. The Pantanal is also a refuge for many threatened mammals like the Jaguar, Ocelot, Maned Wolf, Giant Anteater, Harpy Eagle, and Giant River Otter! The scenery is outstanding, sunsets some of the best, and the food inspiring, making the whole adventure unavoidably captivating. Without a doubt, the highlight of the trip was their day along the Cuaiba River and the sighting of a Jaguar, not just any Jaguar, but likely the largest cat in the area.

Andrew Griswold is the Director of EcoTravel for the Connecticut Audubon Society and is the original concept creator and scientific consultant for the successful cable television series on bird watching called All Bird TV that aired on Discovery’s Animal Planet. Andrew graduated as an honor student in biology from Hartwick College, where he spent two winters working at their biological research station in the Bahamas studying avian ecology. He is the original concept creator of the award winning Connecticut River Eagle Festival (the largest birding festival in the Americas). He leads trips for Connecticut Audubon to Churchill, Texas, Arizona, South Florida, Nova Scotia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Cuba, Minnesota, North Dakota and more. Andy lives in Essex, Connecticut with Marilou, his wife, and Sam, their young son. He is known for his attention to traveler’s needs, fine birding skills, and infectious sense of humor.
