This book (Horta on Faial) and its companion (Lajes do Pico) are photographic diaries of a small group tour to the islands of Pico and Faial in the Azores Archipelago. The trip took place in May which is the best time to see blue whales, fin whales and humpback whales which pass the islands on their way to their feeding grounds and the resident sperm whales. My trip was well organised by “The Dolphin and Whale Connection Ltd”. They are very flexible with their arrangements and I was able to add further days to the tour with a few days in Horta on the adjacent island of Faial. I saw and photographed so much during the 9 days there I felt I had to produce a book for each of the harbours we sailed out of. Being way out in the Atlantic, the weather in the Azores can be challenging and so it was on this trip. The first day of the trip was lost due to the weather in Pico, next day the sea was still too rough and the weather unsuitable to go out looking for whales and dolphins. This provided an opportunity to learn more about the cetaceans; an opportunity to visit the whale museum and familiarisation with Lajes. The following day sea conditions had improved a little, we did get out and we did see whales and dolphins. The photographs in the book provide some idea of the choppy sea, not ideal for whale watchers, but from a photographic view point providing perhaps a more interesting and different perspective than a flat blue sea that many wished for. Over the next few days the sea conditions steadily improved and for the last few days it was a calm sea and blue skies. I travelled to Horta, for the last couple of days where the good weather continued.
