Acerca del libro
“Escape From Las Vegas; The Expanding Border of Neon”, is a collection of panoramic photographs following a journey from the centre of Las Vegas through the layers of the surrounding suburbs and into the desert beyond. Making a similar journey to work every day, Sean Megna photographs the city as a local, viewing the economic segregations that make up the infrastructure of urban sprawl. That infrastructure is reflected in modern American urban centers following a history of suburban development and anti urbanism that lead to the decentralization of America’s population, a concentration of wealth in the periphery of towns and cities, and the advantages real estate developers and construction firms have over accessibility to land use. The housing loan system favors development of new homes over the restoration of older neighborhoods which gives advantages to developers. This pattern exacerbates the flow of wealth out of older parts of town into the suburbs, making the control of a city’s growth exclusive to the very wealthy. Las Vegas stands as an example in the long history of landscape photography and development in the American West.
