A man’s words define him. We must all answer the question: Am I a person of integrity who places value on truth, or do I indulge in the world’s fiction that truth is relative and character doesn’t matter.
Isaiah proves a compelling illustration of the value and priority of integrity. Following King Uzziah’s death, Isaiah encountered the presence of God. Isaiah, the greatest prophet, statesman and counselor, recognized his humanity (and hence his sinful nature) at that revealing moment. Isaiah pronounced judgement on himself, “Woe is me! for I am undone” (Isaiah 6:5, KVJ). the word “undone” is significant, for Isaiah realized that he was not the complete, integrated person he previously thought. He was “undone” because, as Isaiah said, “I am a man of uncertain lips” (Isaiah 6:5). Integrity, and the accompanying commitment to God’s truths, is the true barometer of our hearts. Integrity is not merely a component part; integrity is the glue that holds us together.
The title of this book, A Man and His Word, is seemingly simple. Yet it is profound in its reach - if you and I are willing to reach. Whether as husbands, fathers, or in the workplace, our mission is to be men of integrity. A Man and His Word challenges us at every turn to be men of our word.
“My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to a man’s whole body. Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk from your lips… The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful” (Proverbs 4:20-24; 12:22, NIV).
