He reduced the travel time between England and India which resulted in improved commerce and industry. He was probably DeLessops greatest influence to build the Suez Canal. His short life was one of impulsive determination and adventure. He was disliked by Government and bureaucrats due to his forthrightness and his lowly beginning. A brilliant skilled naval officer who turned his talents into a successful business career. Despite all his efforts he never lived long enough to enjoy the fruits of his success. A fading and vandalised statue stands in his home town of Chatham in Kent.
