We first came into the area in the summer of 2007 when we purchased a cabin on nearby North Sand Lake. For the next eight years we walked, ran, rode and drove by the Sacred Grove on Thompson Road without even realizing it was there. That first time in September 2015 when we stepped off the road and went up the path to the Gathering Place was a journey into peacefulness and solitude. When we reached the labyrinth, which is fully 60 feet in diameter, we were amazed at the arrangement of the stones, laid down in what seemed to be concentric circles, but later, for those who took the time to walk it, the stones revealed an intricate, circuitous path to the large boulder placed at the center. We have returned many times since that first experience at the labyrinth — in the heat of summer morning, the cool of an autumn afternoon, and in the silence following a winter snowfall.
