‘Round Midnight is a photographic essay shot in Detroit during the hours leading into and after 12:00am.The title of the project comes from jazz pianist Thelonious Monk’s composition of the same name that has become a standard played by many musicians across many genre’s.
The series was photographed from 2011 until 2016 and features many unique venues and scenes such as street racing in South West Detroit, iron casting for the purpose of performance art by the Carbon Arts organization, snowy cityscapes in the Cass Corridor, musicians preforming in low lit night clubs and many more.These nocturnal scenes are as diverse as the city they were created in.
There really wasn’t much thought about this project, pertaining to what I shot, it was more about when I shot. It kind of evolved over a three year period, if I was out and felt like shooting I would shoot as close to12:00am as I could and where ever I happened to be.
