Mackenzie Field is painting a Kentucky Derby prospect and witnesses the horse being wounded by a sniper. Her childhood memory of a disturbed child involves Mackenzie in the hunt for the killer who threatens her town and her life. Mackenzie Field has had too much death in her life: her mother when she was twelve and her soldier husband when she was twenty. She grows from being a near recluse to having a successful career painting portraits of racehorses. Then she sees the young Thoroughbred she is painting being wounded by a sniper. In the next few days a beautiful woman is shot outside a bar, and people are wounded and killed at a barn dance outside her small Kentucky town. Mackenzie becomes involved with the Sheriff’s deputy investigating the crimes. At the same time, a local photographer, who claims he knew her when they were children, is stalking her. Mackenzie doesn’t remember him, but terrible memories of the summer she lost her mother begin to return to her. Veteran who were snipers in the Army and are suffering from PTSD come under suspicion. Meanwhile, the killer, who believes he can heal his brother by taking other lives, decides that Mackenzie is his final answer.
