Through out hundreds of years, one of the oldest Icelandic traditions still remains as the day of today. Every year the Icelandic farmers bring their sheep and horses up to the summer pasture in the highlands. In the autumn the farmers ride up to gather and bring the animals down to the farms in the valley.
At Vi∂idalur in North Iceland approximately 500 horses is being gathered in the highlands and brought down to the round up for sorting between the farms.

Photographer Ida Schmidt translates her passion for nature and horses into a delicate and powerful blend of natural realism. By profession a commercial photographer specialising in portraiture. Ida's current focus is on the Icelandic horse, examining the working relationship that enables sustainable and ecological farming as well as contributes to the independence of a people shaped by a challenging northern subarctic climate and isolation of life on an island.
