This book is the final expression of a unique artistic, journalistic and political response to the devastation of New Orleans by the post-Hurricane Katrina failure of the levee system that was to protect the city. The author photographed the flood lines in New Orleans, constructed an interactive photo installation that grew from approximately 50 linear feet to over 200 and was installed 14 times in various cities around Louisiana and in Florida over the past 10 years. All along the way, viewers were invited to respond to the exhibit by writing comments on the foam core panels of the installation above and below the photomontage of the waterline. This book reproduces portions of the installation with its many acquired "voices." It contains two short essays, one discussing the photographic characteristics and contribution of the project and one analyzing the comments written on the panels. An Episcopal priest whose devastated church on Canal St. hosted the first installation in New Orleans for several months contributes a brief theological reflection on how the exhibit engaged faith traditions in helping people to process the disaster.
