Over Familiar is an exploration into the use of the internet as a visual archive, constantly growing through channels of sharing via social media and smartphones providing internet access on the move. The general public are constantly recording their surroundings through the use of Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook, resulting in an over saturation of images of the same things over and over. Food, friends, pets, holidays, landmarks, all photographed a million times over, all shared to one another.
The subjects of Samuel’s photographs were chosen in direct opposition to vernacular photographic subjects. Focusing on three key areas that are classically photographed in Nottingham, Samuel has recorded lampposts, parking meters, bins, trees and floor grates in abundance. Shown collectively within the pages of this book, the archive of his photographic work acts as a comment on the overwhelming amount of seemingly pointless imagery stored within the cloud that is the internet.
