BEHIND THE LENS

My name is Erin James and I am currently a senior at University of Wisc-Stout. My major is Graphic Communications Management with a custom emphasis of graphic and web design. I am also hoping to have a photo minor once I graduate.

I have photographed around the world, from America to Fiji, from London to the Caribbean. Whether my collection entails fashion, culture, glamour or art, I am always searching new ways of seeing; I capture moods and expressions and frame them into moments.

For this particular collection, my artistic direction was inspired by the work of the Israeli-American photographer Guy Aroch. His fashion photography is a thing of beauty. The delicacy of his portraits is mesmerising; the soft hues, subtle lighting and lensbaby effect is immediately affecting, as is the random colour spots, the vintage editing and the sensual mystique which he captures of his models.

I used a Nikon D5000, with a 55-300mm and a 55mm fixed lens to capture my models- at times, using a black mesh over the lens to recreate the intimate effects of Aroch’s work. The editing styles I used were also heavily influenced by his creative techniques. These approaches have helped shape my development as a photographer at this time.
