This book is a detailed photographic study of the final 15 years of the best known steam steam worked colliery railways in Natal : The Enyati Railway and the railway serving the Vryheid Coronation colliery and associated entities. Latterly these two railways were run as a combined operation under common management, an operating division of AMCOAL (Anglo American) . These two (adjacent) systems were firm favourites amongst photographers not least because they maintained their fleets of locomotives in good condition, and were well known for the use, inter alia, of huge Garratt locomotives of classes GF and GEA. One. The Author made many visits to these railways over the years and was fortunate in being granted access to some areas that were out of bounds to casual visitors. The result is a book that is a tribute to both the machines and the men that kept them running. It is also a tribute to the other staff and management at Enyati and Vryheid for whom nothing was too much trouble. This is the first book ever published devoted to the colliery railways in the Hlobane (Vryheid) district, and is a tribute to their operation, which had ceased completely by the mid 1990s.
