Acerca del libro
Here the artist explores a world that was his own, the Estate in North West London where he often visited as a teenager. It is distinctive, a ‘bubble world’ created to provide all the facilities that the inhabitants need, from Convenience stores and Churches, to Schools and Health Care Services. The artist balances a comfortable integration with a degree of distance in this series of portraits that catch the Estate’s inhabitants as they travel through their environment. They pause, comfortable in their own space, for just a moment before they move on. The images are an introduction to the inner life of this private community, a cool document that allows its subjects to retain their mystery and their privacy and resists the intrusive interrogation of a journalistic agenda It is a significant statement, however. One that gives us a clear sense of a strong community bonded together, partly in response to the neglect of the wider society. In a contemporary context where current statements are calling for redevelopment of the Estates Ho’s work speaks with a quiet authority for a community with strong ties to each other and to their home that faces destruction and displacement.
