It is 1917. In a house on Winslow Street, in a quiet American town, four young men are discussing their country’s entry into the War. Their reactions to this event set in motion the courses their lives will take, as well as that of Diana, the sister of one of them. The War’s end brings into being a very different world – and the tide of those moving eastward because of it, mingles with those who now move in all directions for their own reasons: Stephan, a young Polish student, needing America, Elena who stays behind, Nigel, a newspaper man from England trying to make his own inroads into understanding the world, and ultimately those from Winslow Street who have their own reasons for ‘ coming and going,’ or simply staying put. Set in the USA and Europe, the moments of individual lives, one's feelings and needs, play out against the various landscapes, as well as the nuances of history, and slowly coming into focus, the threat of another war.
