YOUNG MOMS/ NEW ART

In this day and age one’s early twenties are a time of experimentation, pounding out one’s future goals, and, in the meantime, having as much fun as possible. NYC is a playground seething with advertising, sex, retail, and nightlife. The more subdued life of parenthood often times resides in separate communities, exemplified by growing neighborhoods such as Park Slope, Brooklyn, where day cares, art stores, and boutique clothing stores flourish. The more individual lifestyles of young mothers in NYC are cemented by these separated communities. Today, as a society, we are not as accustomed to moms in their early twenties as we were only decades ago. They are no longer in the realm of teenage mothers but also not a part of the larger parenting communities, and because of this their lives are a story less told.

Young Mom NYC is a compilation of photographs of seven women and their children. The photographs are coupled with outtakes that are a mixture of the subjects own artwork as well as candid photos.
