This book uniquely contains color photographs of all the crew stations on both the lower and upper decks of that most iconic of RAF, RAAF, RNZAF, Norwegian Air Force, South African Air Force and French Navy WWII and post-world-war flying boats, the Short Sunderland. Each photo has a comprehensive caption describing the crewman's equipment and what it was used for. The descriptions were written by the author, Group Captain Derek Empson, MBE, RAF Retired, who also took all the photographs. Derek Empson was himself a Sunderland Mk V navigator from 1952 to 1954, in the Far East and flew sixty-one Sunderland missions over the Yellow Sea and Sea of Japan during the Korean War in support of United Nations Forces. The actual aircraft in the photographs can be seen at the Imperial War Museum at Duxfoird, near Cambridge, England. Gp Capt Derek Empson is also the author of 'Sunderland over Far Eastern Seas' often cited as the most interesting and comprehensive autobiographical account of what it was like to operate Sunderland flying boats.
