In 1958, Mark Rothko was awarded a mural commission. He agreed to provide paintings for the Seagram building’s new luxury restaurant, The Four Seasons, in New York. Rothko later rejected the idea and donated the work to the Tate in London. Initially he wanted to "ruin the appetite of every son of a bitch who ever eats in that room..." but "sitting amid the buzz and excess of the Four Seasons, Rothko must have felt that he had been deluded - that the wealthy diners were not going to be harrowed. That art could not change anything. That his paintings would just be decoration after all." The paintings arrived in London on the morning of Rothko's suicide.
