Acerca del libro
It's basically a colleciton of 100+ images taken from my wanderings around my home town that is London, together with some of my more recent visits to more glamourous places abroad (like Cardiff, for example).
The City is the subject of this collection, in all it's seemingly mundane ugly grey and oversized glory. Two-thirds(ish)of the book is of cityscapes, buildings, infrastructure and streets. The rest of the book comprise a mix of images featuring the interiors of buildings, and also a selection of the people you might see in and around them.
However, I was best pleased and somewhat surprised to be awarded Book of the Week on 9 January 2008. Here's the really sweet review my agent made me put as part of the books' description. Well, if I had an agent, they probably would have said to include it. As it was I asked the cat, and the fact he didn't bite me, I took this as a yes:
"You know that line from As Good As It Gets when Jack Nicholson’s character says to his love interest, “You make me want to be a better man.” Well, David Heil’s book makes me want to be a better photographer.
David recently published Cities, a book he tagged with the words: Arty farty, urban, street, monochrome, candids, cityscapes, and London. Yes they’re descriptive tags, but they do not do his book justice.
I was immediately drawn to his moody, monochromatic images, and I was not alone. Bek, who is one of Blurb’s designers and has a degree from Art Center College of Design, saw the book’s preview and called the composition, perspective, lighting, and subject matter “fabulous.” She said that the book had a cinematic feel and she admired the artful contrast David achieves in his photographs. He calls himself an amateur, but we wouldn’t. View it to see for yourself.
Congratulations, David. You really have a way with black and white cityscapes and you’ve made a gorgeous book. In the book’s introduction, you state that readers are welcome to send you biscuits. In lieu of those, we’re giving you Book of the Week...
