Spencer was raised in a North Gower, Ontario. He displayed early attributes in math and the sciences. He started at Carleton University in Mechanical Engineering before ultimately graduating with a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies. He holds a Certificate in Financial Planning from Algonquin College. He has worked in a variety of positions in Hi-Tech, Construction, and Banking. Fairly late in life he discovered a love of photography. Most recently he has started his own business, Cold Stove Picture Company. He specialises in candid portraiture.
