It's been called an island of "terrible beauty". Canadian photographer Frank King captured this beauty and more during two visits.

From waterfalls and ocean swells to sunsets and sectarian graffiti, Frank ranged far and wide to make his vision of Ireland, all using old-fashioned negative and slide film.

Indeed, Frank's choice of medium affected the layout of Ireland: Visions of Light. Almost all the photos from his 1987 trip are kept small to retain the negative film quality. Most of the rest, captured on 35-mm. and medium format slide film in 1993, are shown in their full glory.

Frank's fascination with Ireland starts in his birthplace, the once mainly Irish Quebec hamlet of Shannon. As an adult, Frank reconnected with his roots through Irish music and history and this spurred his visits. And this book.

He used a Nikon FM2 camera for his first trip, augmenting it in 1993 with a Pentax 6x7 medium format camera. A tripod was essential, as was a polarizing filter to reduce reflections on water and foliage.

All the photographs in Ireland: Visions of Light were processed with Photoshop Elements 4.
