Acerca del libro
Unstaged Paris is a photographic exploration of the city as it reveals itself in passing—through gesture, coincidence, reflection, color, and the layered relationships of everyday life.
Photographed over several days with a 28mm lens, the images were made without staging or intervention. Rather than pursuing familiar monuments or an idealized vision of Paris, John G. Hoey turns his attention toward the fleeting visual arrangements that emerge on sidewalks, through windows, inside cafés, and among people moving through the city.
Figures overlap with advertisements. Reflections interrupt reality. Color, architecture, gesture, and chance briefly align before separating again. The resulting photographs ask the viewer to look beyond the immediately apparent and discover the smaller relationships held within each frame.
Made in 2023 and revisited years later with greater distance and understanding, Unstaged Paris is ultimately less about Paris as a destination than about the act of seeing itself—remaining attentive long enough for the ordinary world to become unexpectedly complex, humorous, mysterious, and human.
