This work initially focuses on the lives of four anchorites: Jutta von Sponheim, Hildegard von Bingen, Wulfric of Haselbury, and Julian of Norwich. This is not a specifically religious work; it seeks to understand the extreme devotion and belief of those who will undertake a life which to any contemporary person seems unimaginable. The photographs portray the journey from a starting point of ordinary existence, and then gradually become more abstract in nature, as the anchorite strives to embrace Divine consciousness, escaping their cell forever.
