Acerca del libro
The Silent Teachers is a short, intimate reflection on belonging, growth, and the quiet ways life teaches us what we need to know. It begins with a simple moment 17 years ago, a mother and her four-year-old daughter having a picnic in a playhouse. When asked why she loved nature so much, the daughter answered, "because nature is a part of me." Those words were beautiful but mysterious at the time. Years later, as the daughter grew into a young woman devoted to conservation, the mother began to understand what her little girl knew instinctively. This realization led her back to nature—especially moss and mushrooms.
Moss teaches that growth doesn’t have to be fast or conventional; it can happen slowly and quietly wherever we are. Growing slowly doesn’t mean we aren’t growing. Sometimes, life isn’t about becoming bigger; it’s about becoming deeper. Mushrooms reveal another lesson: that much of what matters happens beneath the surface. Like mycelium spreading invisibly underground, our relationships, experiences, and years of becoming quietly shape us long before their meaning surfaces.
In the end, all three teachers—the daughter, the moss, and the mushrooms—seem to share the same message: We belong. We are connected. We are part of nature, not separate from it. And some of life’s greatest teachers arrive so quietly we may not recognize them until years later. At its heart, The Silent Teachers is both a small philosophical book about nature and a love letter from a mother to the daughter who taught her how to see it.

Lisa Summers
Kansas City Mo
Lisa Summers was born and raised in Kansas City and now lives at the Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri. She's a mother first, and a connector by nature — years spent building relationships and finding her way into rooms, industries, and conversations most people wouldn't. That same instinct for paying attention to people, and to what's underneath what they say, shows up in her writing. The Silent Teachers grew out of a moment with her daughter that she carried for years before she understood it. She's currently at work on a longer book about growing up as the hearing daughter of a deaf mother — and what it meant to spend a lifetime being someone's ears.
