What motivates one to leave the comforts of home to travel far, often in uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous conditions, to help less fortunate people secure a better life? The American environmental scientist Ron Hoffer spent three decades working around the globe immersed in the task. His stories and photos from the 1990s in countries formerly behind the Iron Curtain comprise the book From the Bronx to Berlin and Beyond, published by Kerber Verlag in 2020. Ron continues his reflections in this new book, taking us on a journey to Central America, Africa, South and East Asia, while also returning to familiar ground in Europe and Central Asia. From Baku to Lusaka and Beyond shows the human face of response to hurricane devastation, drought, climate change, and rapid urbanization. Photos of children in joyous and stressful situations, professional partners, and scenes from chaotic slums to verdant landscapes leaves the reader with a compelling understanding of the value of international cooperation.
