Acerca del libro
The history of Berlin looks back on periods that have left their marks on the city. In choosing walks that reflected different cultural eras, I thought about how they co-exist today, compartmentalized by district. There are echoes of aristocratic civilities in Charlottenburg in the west, the communist past in the east and the hope that appears in its progressive neighbourhoods of the past forty years.
In visiting the Neuesmuseum, I discovered for myself what seemed like a central point in ‘Der Rote Saal’ (The Red Room). It spoke to me of
ancient roots and the desire to anchor one’s
culture deep in a perceived past. I thought of how societies tell themselves stories to create and preserve an identity. Berlin, like many others, is a city of many stories and complex identities.
