This book has brought together two sketch-books which Angela Mahler produced to record some of the journeys which she made in West Africa, while teaching at Mayflower School, Ikenne, Nigeria, from 1965 to 1967.
Her travels took her to Sokoto and Lake Chad as well as to Cotonou and the Ganvier lake village in what is now Benin. In Cameroon she visited mountain towns and villages and took a ferry through the creeks back to Calabar in Nigeria.
The book is the personal account of a very bright young woman in her early 20s. There are stories of great hospitality and kindness which she received. The book is lavishly illustrated with rich colour paintings as well as many pen and ink drawings.
Angela died when she was only 33 years old. This book has been produced by Jonathan Marrow, whom she married soon after she came back from Nigeria, to preserve her work and her lively view of the world.
