Acerca del libro
A photo essay about the centuries-old port of Sunda Kelapa in Jakarta, Indonesia, portraying the day-to-day activities of workers. The port of Sunda Kelapa is serviced by brightly colored, wooden cargo vessels called pinisi that travel across the Indonesian archipelago. This book pays particular attention to the laborers of Sunda Kelapa who work under very harsh conditions by carrying voluminous quantities of both raw and manufactured goods. Into Java, pinisi arrive loaded with timber, rattan, sago, and oil from the illipe nuts. When they leave, they carry cement, bricks, plastic tanks, and other construction material. The pinisi need regular maintenance and Sunda Kelapa is a preferred place for these activities.
