Per molti secoli nelle regioni del Nord Europa la socialità fra gli umani era nettamente divisa tra ciò che era sacro – la Religione, lo Stato, l’Autorità – e ciò che invece veniva considerato profano –la libertà dei costumi, la corruzione, l’inutile esibizionismo. Con l’avvento della piena modernità molte categorie si sono modificate, altre si sono rovesciate, molte ancora sono in una continua trasformazione.

Art became free only when the Sacred became one with the Profane.

For many centuries in the regions of Northern Europe sociality among humans was clearly divided between what was sacred - Religion, State, Authority - and what was considered profane - freedom of morals, corruption, useless exhibitionism. With the advent of full modernity, many categories have changed, others have been overturned, many are still in continuous transformation.
