I was fortunate to grow up in New York City during what music historians call "The Salsa Explosion." While we lived and sang every song and enjoyed powerful arrangements and live concerts, we didn't realize at the time that this genre of music called "Salsa " would one day reach international recognition."Salsa" was like the Mambo on steroids. While it kept its Cuban traditional rhythms, Salsa was a new sound. Explosive, creative, danceable, and with an attitude due to the times' social, economical, and political status in New York City barrios. In Brooklyn, we were excited to play and imitate our newfound role models, and we did. Local bands surged from different neighborhoods. Today, many young musicians back then still perform Salsa and/or Latin Jazz. Some appear in this collection. In 1978, I purchased a Konica F3, 35mm camera. The following pages depicted my photos from gigs and concerts I attended. Enjoy this historical photographic collection.
