This image collection is a visual essay on the aesthetics, line and shape, reflected in midcentury automotive design. These details hope to provide a joyful highlighting of the qualities which have given these overweight behemoths the enduring interst and fondness they still enjoy. The technique used is what I call “Digital Pochoir” after the French stencil process from the early twentieth century. It was used in creating their beautiful art and fashion magazines such as Verve and Gazette du Bon Ton. I start with a color digital file, convert it to grayscale and then apply colors one at a time using a series of digital masks. The effect produces the right degree of whimsy these work-a-day sculptures deserve. I hope they provoke some reflection and are enjoyed.
