Don Blake grew up in SE, Washington, D.C., during the 1940s and 50s. He graduated from Anacostia High School in 1960, joined the army, spending most of his time in Heidelberg, Germany, assigned to the 529th Military Police USAERU Honor Guard Co. He joined the D.C. Police Department in 1964 and retired as a Detective Lieutenant in 1985. During his career he received over 100 awards to include Policeman of the Month and the Silver Medal of Valor. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He then joined the State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security, enjoying another successful career until his retirement in 2007. He became the Director of Domestic Operations, supervising 800 security officers, a staff of 100 and a budget of $85 million a year. He modernized physical and technical security, received numerous awards to include the Civil Service Employee of the Year. After the events of 911, he became the Director of Emergency Preparedness tasked to develop new emergency programs.
