Experts say that 620.000 plus barrels of crude oil seep from the ocean floor off North America every year. Plus, some 6,555 barrels of crude deposits are the direct result of oil company activity, be it off shore drilling or deposits from tankers.



Adjacent to the shipping lanes and offshore oil platforms of Long Beach and L.A. Harbors in Southern California is the small beach community

of Surfside, which plays an unfortunate host to these crude deposits.



For over two years photographer Ron Stewart walked Surfside Beach, in search of the surreal qualities where these sand and crude deposits merge.



These beautiful yet toxic patterns have spawned a Crude Sand.
