Born in 1933 in Czernowitz, Romania, Sylvia Lavon’s early childhood was filled with the warmth of family, tradition, and simple joys—until the Holocaust shattered everything she knew. Forced into a crowded ghetto and later deported to the harsh conditions of Murafa in Ukraine, Sylvia endured hunger, illness, and constant fear alongside her parents and extended family. Through resilience, resourcefulness, and the unwavering strength of her mother, the family survived unimaginable hardship.

After the war, Sylvia’s journey continued across continents—from postwar Romania to a tent in Israel, and ultimately to a new life in the United States. In Cleveland, she built a family, raised three children, and became part of a close-knit community of fellow survivors, helping preserve the memory of those who were lost.

Sylvia’s story is one of survival, rebuilding, and gratitude. Her life reminds us not only of the horrors of the past, but of the strength of the human spirit—and the importance of remembering, honoring, and moving forward with hope.
